What is osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition where bone mineral density and bone strength decrease, which raises the risk of fractures. It is often called a silent disease because many people have no symptoms until a bone breaks.

Who is at risk and when to get screened

Women 65 and older should be screened for osteoporosis. Postmenopausal women under 65 should be screened if they have risk factors such as prior fracture, smoking, long term steroid use, low body weight, or certain medical conditions. The evidence is currently insufficient to recommend routine screening in men. Screening helps prevent fractures by finding low bone density early.

Common risk factors

Age, family history, low body weight, smoking, alcohol misuse, long term glucocorticoid therapy, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain endocrine or gastrointestinal conditions increase risk.

Screening and diagnosis navigation

Your advocate can help schedule a bone density test called a DXA scan and gather prior records. DXA is the standard test that measures bone mineral density at the hip and spine and helps diagnose osteoporosis. We also help you understand T scores and next steps.

We can also help you and your clinician use a validated risk tool such as FRAX to estimate ten year fracture risk and decide on treatment plans.

Medication and treatment support

If treatment is recommended, your advocate helps you understand common options such as bisphosphonates, denosumab, and anabolic agents including teriparatide, abaloparatide, and romosozumab. We help you prepare questions for your prescriber, track refills, and watch for side effects, while your clinician decides what is right for you.

Nutrition and movement

We share trusted guidance on calcium, vitamin D, and safe exercise. Many adults need about 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of calcium daily from food and supplements depending on age and sex, and vitamin D supports calcium absorption. Your clinician can personalize targets for you. We also encourage weight bearing, muscle strengthening, and balance exercises with a plan that is safe for your health status. A physical therapist can tailor movements and help reduce fall risk.

Fall prevention and home safety

Falls are a leading cause of serious fractures. We help you review medications, vision checks, and simple home changes such as removing trip hazards, adding grab bars, and improving lighting. We can connect you with community programs that build strength and balance.

What to expect with an advocate

  • A single point of contact
You get a dedicated advocate who learns your goals and coordinates with your doctors, pharmacists, and therapists so everyone stays on the same page.
  • Appointment and paperwork help
We schedule DXA scans and follow ups, request records, and help you prepare questions for visits.
  • Clear, plain language
We explain test results and care plans in everyday terms and review instructions after visits so nothing is missed.
  • Ongoing support
We check in on symptoms, medication access, therapy progress, and fall prevention. Your plan updates as your needs change.

Coverage and costs

Medicare Part B covers bone mass measurement tests such as DXA once every 24 months if you meet qualifying criteria, and more often when medically necessary. Coverage for medications can vary by plan and setting. We can help you confirm benefits and costs with your insurance.

Practical steps you can start today

  • Ask about screening if you are a woman 65 or older or a younger postmenopausal woman with risk factors.
  • Build a bone smart routine that includes weight bearing and muscle strengthening activity plus balance practice, with guidance from your clinician or a physical therapist.
  • Check your home for hazards and make simple safety upgrades to lower fall risk.
  • Review calcium and vitamin D intake with your clinician and dietitian, using food first and supplements as needed.
