Medicare Coverage

11

Does Medicare cover dental appointments?

+

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) generally does not cover routine dental care such as cleanings, fillings, or dentures. However, many Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits as part of their coverage. If you need dental care, it is worth comparing Medicare Advantage plans in your area to find one that includes the dental services you need.

When might Original Medicare cover dental services?

+

Original Medicare may cover dental services when they are integral to another covered medical procedure. Examples include dental clearance before an organ transplant or cardiac surgery, treatment related to head and neck cancer, or jaw repair following a traumatic injury. In these cases, the dental work must be documented as medically necessary and directly connected to the covered procedure.

How can I compare Medicare plans with dental benefits?

+

You can use the official Medicare Plan Finder tool at Medicare.gov to compare Medicare Advantage plans in your area. Look at each plan's dental benefits, provider network, and expected out-of-pocket costs. An Understood Care advocate can also help you navigate your options and find the plan that best fits your needs.

What about prescriptions after dental work?

+

Medicare Part D or your Medicare Advantage plan may cover prescriptions related to dental procedures, such as antibiotics or pain medication. Coverage depends on your specific plan formulary. Your Understood Care advocate can help you understand your prescription benefits and find cost-saving options.

Does Medicare cover rent or assisted living?

+

Medicare generally does not pay for assisted living rent, room and board, or long-term custodial care. The program focuses on skilled medical services rather than housing costs. However, there may be other programs and benefits available to help with housing expenses. An Understood Care advocate can help you explore all your options.

Does Medicare pay for a nursing home?

+

Medicare may cover brief skilled nursing facility stays following a qualifying hospital stay when medically necessary. However, Medicare generally does not pay for long-term nursing home residence. Coverage is limited in duration and requires that you need skilled nursing or rehabilitation services.

How long will Medicare pay for rehab in a skilled nursing facility?

+

Medicare coverage for skilled nursing facility rehab is limited to a certain number of days per benefit period. Your cost share can increase after the initial portion of your stay. The exact duration depends on your medical needs and continued eligibility. Your Understood Care advocate can help you understand the timeline and plan ahead.

Will Medicare cover caregivers at home?

+

Medicare covers home health services in specific situations - you must be homebound, need skilled nursing care or therapy, and have a doctor order the services. However, Medicare is not designed to cover ongoing, full-time in-home caregiving or personal care assistance with daily activities. An Understood Care advocate can help you determine what home care services you qualify for.

Can Medicare Advantage pay for rent or utilities?

+

Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited supplemental benefits that can be used for certain expenses in specific cases, but this is plan-specific and not guaranteed from year to year. These benefits vary widely by plan and location. Contact your plan directly or speak with an Understood Care advocate to find out what supplemental benefits your plan may offer.

What program helps pay for assisted living long term?

+

Medicaid is the primary public program that can help pay for long-term assisted living care. However, eligibility requirements and covered services vary significantly by state. Some states offer Medicaid waiver programs specifically for assisted living. An Understood Care advocate can help you understand your state's options and navigate the application process.

What support is available for Alzheimer's?

+

Medicare covers many services related to Alzheimer's care, including doctor visits, diagnostic testing, and certain home health services. Additionally, there are caregiver support programs, respite care options, and community resources available. Understood Care advocates can help coordinate your care, connect you with local support services, and navigate insurance coverage for Alzheimer's-related needs.
